26.04.11 - On 4 April the president of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, paid a visit to state enterprise Editores Gráficos Nacionales (Editogran) in Guayaquil, the biggest city in Ecuador, where a brand-new KBA Colora newspaper press line went live at the beginning of March printing two national dailies, El Telégrafo and PP El Verdadero.

After being welcomed by Editogran management Mr Correa was accompanied by El Telégrafo director Edwin Ulloa, media consultant José Orús and plant manager Michael on a tour of the factory, where he witnessed the Colora’s high-tech capabilities at first hand.

At a press conference after the tour Correa emphasised the importance of the government’s investment in what is the most advanced newspaper press in the country. “While there was no doubting the quality of its content, El Telégrafo was experiencing technical problems with its old press. Now Editogran has a new production plant, a highly advanced printing press and technology that is of a world-class standard,” Correa declared.

The new 75,000cph KBA Colora has dramatically cut both printing time and production costs for the two daily titles. The press line, which is fed by two KBA Pastomat C reelstands with KBA Patras M reel loading, is configured as two four-high towers with two turner bars and one KF 5 jaw folder. Automation modules include colour and cut-off register control to enhance image quality.

Editogran’s 30,000m² (323,000ft²) site houses production halls, a warehouse and mailroom. A total of 310 staff are engaged in the production of the two daily titles, which are among the oldest in the country.
