One of WAN-IFRA’s most important activities is research in all areas of newspaper production, digital media development, media business, advertising, organisation and strategy. WAN-IFRA Research goes under the brand name of Shaping the Future of News publishing (SFN). Research projects are also being conducted in the developing world under the name of “Media Development”.

The research focuses on identifying, analysing and publishing important breakthroughs and opportunities that can benefit newspapers all over the world, and help them solve problems and manage new tasks. WAN-IFRA provides members with a library of case studies and business ideas, and a wealth of other vital information for all those who need to follow press industry trends.

  • WAN-IFRA Bar Code for paper reels
    The Materials Management Database project was launched as a spinoff of the Newsprint and Newsink Guide. Today it is used by printers, pressroom foremen and technical management as an information source for facts and advice for dealing with the materials used in producing newspapers. Among other informaton you find the specification of the WAN-IFRA Bar Code for paper reels in this online database. Most of the entries in the database originate from the members of the Material Management Committee; some come from outside sources (as marked), after review and approval by the committee. This database is continually being updated and expanded. New entries will be marked with a label in red type.

    World Press Trends, the primary and most authoritative source of data on the newspaper industry worldwide, published annually since 1989, is now available in an interactive format: the World Press Trends Database.
  • World Printers Forum, the Print Community within WAN-IFRA
    The World Printers Forum (WPF) is an organisation of newspaper printers and suppliers within WAN-IFRA. It promotes the power of print and the sustainability of print production.

  • The newspaper industry is under pressure globally. While in the West, decline of the newspaper has been rapid, in the East, newspapers will probably survive for longer. However, there are several pressures on the newspaper industry in the East as well – competition from digital readership, increasing input costs, reducing advertising spends, and so on. In such a scenario, it is important for newspaper industry players to collaborate to improve internal operational efficiencies across the industry. Through such an effort the overall industry will stand to benefit. With this objective in mind, an industry-wide benchmarking exercise was carried out to identify specific improvement opportunities across players. The result has been extremely encouraging.
